In the several feet closest to the stage, people were wringing wet with perspiration. People who waited all afternoon and evening for Led Zeppelin were complaining that the air was too stale to breathe. The pressure of bodies against bodies was too much. I had to get out, said 18 year-old Lloyd of Valley Station, his curls hanging wet from his head. I couldnt breathe in there. The T-shirted stage security men stood on a wooden platform and the veins in their arms bulged as they pulled on the men and woman handed up to them by the crowd.One girl was unable to stand on her own, as they carried her, doubled up from the stage area, she said On, my God. And they stretched her out on the concrete. Those that had been lifted out bought drinks at the concession stands and looked around for the friends they had been separated from. At 9 p.m. they were refreshed, again part of the crowd, and adding to the roaring ovation given Led Zeppelin as the show began. (J. Adams / CourierJournal / May 1977) I was only 14 at the time but I blackmailed my older sister into taking me with her and her friends ( it was something about the bag of pot I found in her room). We went to the show and she said "remember where we parked and be here an hour after the shows over" and it was amazing I don't remember much about the crowds being as bad as the review but the music and lights are in my head forever. I ended up standing in one of the concrete halls that lead down to the floor but I still saw most of the show. It amazes me what time does to the memory.I was and al ways will be a led head. My friends who attended the show with me couldn't remember the year, either could I. The show sold out faster than any other show that has ever played louisville including the stones, eagles, elvis, elton john, rod stewart. The problem with the show was the band was delayed close to an hour and at the time and the concert was festival seating, wich is no longer allowed in freedom hall. They sold about 5000 more tickets than the hall could handle coupled with some really bad sustances that most people were under the influence of. When the band took the stage every body kept surging forward, crushing the people up front.Robert Plant would stop in the middle of a song and tell every one toback up or they would haveto quit the show. Security were pulling crushed girls over the stage barricade to save them.and trying to push eveyone back. Finally everybody chilled and the graetest band in the world rock and rolled . This was the best concert I ever attended. The band delivered a strong set start to finish. I remember John Paul, the Golden God and Jimmy sitting down. The first song after that was Bron-Y-Aur Stomp. They got the crowd going first with that highlands riff and launched into the song. It seems like the crowd was waiting for Rock n Roll and when John kicked the intro the crowd exploded. From my seat stage left lower, the floor was a mass of people swelling, jumping, hands and lighters in the air. An amazing night with an amazing band. What a great show it was. 3 friends and I drove in from Lexington (University of Kentucky). I still have the ticket stub!
