It wasn't "oil" it was 2000 gallons of LP gas (propane) which is a byproduct of oil refining and is OFTEN BURNED OFF AT THE REFINERY AS WASTE. Ever see a burning torch for no apparent reason at a refinery? Thats why. It costs too much to liquefy it for customers that dont exist.
They weren't trying to make a statement that oil is "bad" or that we shouldn't use it. They simply wanted to dramatize the "worshipful relationship and dependence modern man has toward oil". I think they did that.
