Sorry, there's no customers for propane, how on earth did you come to that conclusion. The flame that's lit at refineries is basically a pilot light, if the plant goes into emergency shut down, all that pressurized gas has to go somewhere. They release it through flare stacks so potentially toxic gas is burned vs. releasing it into the atmosphere.

It wasn't "oil" it was 2000 gallons of LP gas (propane) which is a byproduct of oil refining and is OFTEN BURNED OFF AT THE REFINERY AS WASTE. Ever see a burning torch for no apparent reason at a refinery? Thats why. It costs too much to liquefy it for customers that dont exist.
They weren't trying to make a statement that oil is "bad" or that we shouldn't use it. They simply wanted to dramatize the "worshipful relationship and dependence modern man has toward oil". I think they did that.

you can't seriously be this daft. Do you really think that you are engendering some original idea here? Maybe this is just a whim, but dont you think the inability to escape our dependence on oil is part of their statement, and that perhaps their excessive use brings that point to the surface? Or maybe you are right and the 100 or so people that worked on this piece just never thought about the fact that they are using oil to talk about their dependence on it.
