Basically you use a large socket against one side of the shifter tripod frame while a smaller socket is on the other side flush against the actual bushing.
You use the vice to squeeze the bushing into the larger socket.
It's a tight fit and almost sounds as though somethings breaking when the bushing starts to move. Use liquid wrench or wd-40, and make sure to keep the smaller socket square against the bushings so it doesnt bind up.
You can use this same method to install the new bushings.
