All Around My Hat was probably the biggest of the Folk/Rock genre songs that were popular for about twenty minutes in the early seventies and was probably my first introduction to what folk music could be - interesting and exciting and fun. Up until then, folk music had meant listening to some over-the-hill, warbling soprano murdering Early One Morning on a scratched LP in school music lessons. This was very different and intriguing - I havent looked back since.
There was a raft of bands purveying their own brands of cranked-up folk at the time: Fairport Convention, of course; Lindisfarne (who will always be remembered for that one song, The Fog On The Tyne - a great song but they did better); The Strawbs - again that one big hit, Part of the Union, overshadowed everything else; and Pentangle who never really troubled the charts that much. Of them all, though, I have remained fondest of Steeleye Span, Maddy Prior. Tim Hart and the rest. They had the fun upbeat, show-band quality that the others didnt as well as the darkest of dark sides exposed only on their albums in songs like Long Lankin and The Boys of Bedlam. They could be light and fluffy with songs like Saucy Sailor, a bit bawdy with songs like The Cuckoos Nest, funny - Marrow Bones, and down right Rock-on with Songs like Alison Gross. Not to mention the great dance-along jigs, reels and step dances. They werent so worthy and folk-purist either, to eschew great non-folk tunes. They do a great version the Buddy Holley song, Rave On totally a capella.
There are various versions of this traditional English folk song and when singing and playing it on my own, I do a slower, straight 4 (ie not shuffle rhythm) arrangement with lyrics closer to the broadsheet edition. As I am able to multi-track my videos, however, it seems a shame not to treat you to my wildly inaccurate and off-key version of Steeleyes harmonies and rhythms.
Enjoy
Tony

@ukuleledoogie thanks very much. Who else would you expect to find with those search terms?

Great, simply funny in the most perculiar way. I'm still laughing every now and then while writing this.
I also liked this version with a ukelele much to my surprise. You have nice a nice vocal as well.
But most of all, thank you for putting a smile on my face.
A little request; how about doing a version of Bob Geldorf's "The Great Song of Indifference"?

@Kronjyde
Thanks
I don't know the Geldof song - I'll have to look out for it
