All I can see is a rod that burst from bad angles due to the fisherman not following the fish when it went port side.....the gear is spot on...custom jig rod and reel that collapses to the butt section when fishing higher than 20kg....it just fully collapsed when a big fish went south without the angler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rod is hand made in Japan. The makers of these rods are considered to be among the forefront of high performance fishing rod developers, and are considered by many to make some of the best rods in the world.
This particular rod is very tough too. Specifically designed for BIG Amberjack (upwards of 100lbs). They jig lures up to 600 grams!
But even a world class powerful rod like this can be broken with a bad angle, and the smallest of pressures.
yeah i agree. I dont think the reel was too much at all. I reckon he could have cranked up the reel even. Also that rod was handling the pressure perfectly. Thats a fantastic rod, its not going to break with the drag so lose. But like you say the angle of the rod was too acute. classic way to break a rod. I broke a $500 10kg rod on a 1.5 kilo Bonito exactly the same way. You never make that mistake twice!
The only way that might have won the battle was if the guy was using a heavier rod and fishing much more drag trying to short pump the fish right from the start.
The only fault that I can point to the angler is when the rod was bending beyond it was supposed to bend he didn't lighten up the drag to help save the rod. But, either way, you could see the the line was going 90 degrees straight down and the fish would have cut him off down the reefs anyway. So, my conclusion is the gear was outgunned from the word go, as such the angler wasn't able to turn the fish and once that happened the fish just carried on nose-diving to the reefs to cut his line. (TBC)
The point is the specific rating of this rod might be too low in this situation. In plain English, the rod was outgunned by the fish. As for the reel, I doubt he was fishing max drag as he didn't seem to be struggling as the boat swayed. Trust me, Stella has a max drag of 50lbs, if you are fishing 50lbs drag on a boat, unless you are Arnold you will definitely have problems. Plus the line was totally flying out of the reel. (TBC)
