The demo for Mafia 2 was released on the 10th of August, and I have to say it has long developed since its processor. The demo is now available on PSN for the PS3, Xbox Live Marketplace for the Xbox 360, and on Steam for the PC.
The developers have certainly taken an edge to producing this game, as the game engine has been optimized much better than other recent games (such as GTA IV; Rockstar's decision to directly port the game from the console to the PC was downright stupid) to allow for much better performance and graphics.
The graphics are up to the standards of games today, allowing for 16x anti aliasing to run seamlessly without ruining the overall performance. The shadows are portrayed realistically, and even the detail on every single person is superb.
Shooting has been made much more realistic as well -- the guns handle uniquely to each other in terms of recoil as well as accuracy over range. Every shot you make is satisfying, due to the atmosphere created in each fire fight you encounter. The cover system works for the game, but at times it felt like the character could instantaneously wrap to the nearest wall.
The point which I wanted to make most of all was the vast improvements in the game play system. Whereas (I'm guessing) in the previous games the free roam and the missions were separated, they have now been merged together to form a consistent sandbox free roam game (i.e. buying better weapons for guns, clothing(?) etc).
However, I do have a slight comment about the handling of the vehicles -- the vehicles look great and all in combination with the city, but driving them feels like driving a car on a chasis made on jelly. Perhaps it was the fact that the camera was not mounted (it rotates freely around the car) onto the car, but apart from that Mafia 2 scores all the goals for being my most anticipated game of the year.
So, give it a try yourself. You might like it, you might not. But at least you would have tried it.
