A short video on aquaculture in Europe - and the opportunities for further development. As aquaculture is growing rapidly in the rest of the world, being the quickest growing food producing sector, the cultivation of fish, shellfish and algae has been on a 'stand-still' in Europe during the last decade or more. The European Commission has launched a revision of the common aquaculture strategy (April 8. 2009). It surely is a nice vision, but a bit toothless with its lack of operationality and no accompanying resources to give the needed power to fulfill the strategy.
This video has been produced by Mostra Communication (www.mostra.com) on request from the European Commission (DG Mare). The video is free to be distributed - and can be ordered free of charge at: http://www.tvlink.org/viewer.cfm?vidID=319&strID=260

  • You don't need access to the sea. You can build farm ponds or artificial tanks.

  • @bemmington Most sea fish can be farmed in the most practical way which is just offshore in large pens in stronger currents to reduce disese. I think shrimp and certain other fish are best farmed in micromanaged environments.

Theres no reason why we cant farm the entire worlds supply of fish in farms.

  • What's sad is how much tilapia is imported from China to the U.S.. We should be doing this ourselves!

  • @AbattoirDream Why bother commenting if it hardly matters? , this is an aquaculture forum , therefore i write comments regarding aquaculture.

  • @hablerz umm.. lets see.. leave them alone maybe? stop dumping shit in the sea..? it hardly matters.. its not up to me or you is it.

  • @AbattoirDream Thanks for the intelligent, concise response. What is your solution to overfishing and shortages of quality fish ?

  • @hablerz there is, because thats dumb.

  • @frthrdwnthesprl They are trying to make a profit, growing power gets free money from organization and grants. Will Allen seems to have 50 workers to produce 15,000 pounds of fish.

  • Many think all you need to do is hook a DC air pump to a solar panel and 12 volt battery to make a solar aerator for aquaculture. Not even close. For the real deal go to 24-7solaraerator.

  • @sbflash311

not for every type of sea creature. Think about it, what do mussels eat? They eat plankton from the sea. Unless you are willing to make it yourself, you must be next to the sea.

  • @sbflash311 that is true and I happen to think that growing the fish in large inland tanks is even better than to do it in the sea or artificial ponds. But don't you forget, that you need a lot of space for that too, which is also quite expensive.
