Well, some days ago I have "finally" seen Mother of Tears: propably worst than Phantom of the Opera, worst than The Card Dealer (or The Card Player); it's really the SHIT. So, you're right: even if this scene has something wrong, it is not SO wrong.
It's amazing how much better this scene is without the original, ridiculous sounding scream. I've always found that, and the obviously superimposed face in certain shots, did a lot of damage to an otherwise solid scene.
Another thing that might've helped is if they'd included that shot that Tom Savini alluded to on the Eye for Horror documentary (with the head landing on a spike or something, and then slowly sliding down it). At least could've made it more macabre....

I agrre this is is not classic Argento...but it`s still a good death scene though.

It looks like a parody of the decapitation in "Deep Red". This isn't one of the best films by Argento.
