From SlateRoofWarehouse.com: Ice dams and ice buildup on the eaves of lower slope slate roofs can cause leakage in bad years. This video clip shows how to prevent that leakage by installing a "snow apron" on the eaves made of soldered copper.

  • You reply to questions just like a politician dancing around the question as stated.By the way is your drip edge in the video butted together or overlapped?Water can't get through that gap right?

  • Is ice and water shield better than 30# felt or worse?Which one will seal against the gutterboard better.30# felt is a temporary material that will not perform as well as ice & water shield.So your telling me that 30# felt will keep the water from entering the gap between gutterboard and felt underlayment? It will work on an unheated barn but we don't live in unheated barns.Maybe you should tell all of us roofers in Northeast Ohio that we are surely misguided.

  • They are both temporary. That's why you can't rely on either one of them. Use the copper drip edge to protect the gutter board. We are in northwest PA, so it's about the same.

  • If you install a drip edge down 3-4" with ice and water shield on the roof surface and over gutterboard 3-4" and the re-install gutter over copper drip flange and seal top edge of copper drip with another 6" strip of ice and water shield and solder your drip edge together and the pan to drip squeeze lap then you just might keep it out of the overhangs.Install your slip rosin over the ice shield.Lawrence Crookshanks Crookshanks Architectural Roofworks LLC.   • Ice shield is a temporary material relative to copper and slate. It makes no sense to try to depend on it for the water-tightness of the roof over the life of the roof. It will work temporarily, but that's not good enough for me.

  • and drip edge.As we all know water seeks it's own level.Prolonged cold temperatures only compound things and ice on copper will build up 6-8" on roof surface.At first warmup the roof surface releases first and water will fill back side against drip edge.This will be first point of entry between gutterboard and first roofboard up and under felt.You will also have water between copper and felt as it will enter through squeeze joint at lower edge since it was not soldered.

  • Let's consider this scenario! You say that you have ice water coming in across this area.You do not mention if you have boxed in soffit or open rafter soffit.If you do not install ice and water shield you have not changed the inevitable outcome.In winter water will fill gutter and start freezing solidly to gutter and back of gutterboard starting the eventual ice dam building up and over copper pans.Heavy snow buildup will insulate against roof surface and at first warmup leak up under felt paper

  • WOW.. GREAT Video. I'm no roofer, but that looks a DAMN good idea. Wish you were in the area to fix my roof!! I have ice damn issues at my new built home and 2 roofing contractors have not been able to solve my issue. I will mention the soldered copper apron method, problem is don't know many good roofers in the area... ANYWAYS.... GREAT VIDEO!!!!
