For those interested, the piece is a variation on Franz Schubert's "Piano Sonata in A Major". Not Schumann. It is available in most music stores and online.
@xxAmbergrisxx - I agree, this didn't ever feel like a sitcom theme song. I used to (still do) watch this show, but honestly before I started watching the DVDs, I almost totally forgot this theme song was used - I always associated the short jazzy tune with this show, as those are the years I remember the best from the NBC run.
This is a funny show - I have alot of Wings videos on my You Tube channel.
Michael is right. This longer version is the original, and the best. They shortened it considerably in the later seasons. Something common back then with shows that went beyond a single season that had lengthy intros. Most of the time it didn't matter, nor does anyone notice or care. But in this case it robbed us of one of the most beautiful intros ever on television. Thanks for posting...
I think you're confused. This is the original theme as far as I remember. I went on a hunt for the sheet music when I was a kid (it's a piece by Schumann .. I think. :)
Later NBC used a non-theme opening and rolled credits through the opening scene. They brought back the original theme in the final episode.
