Culture jamming, a tactic used by many consumer social movements[1], is a mechanism in which an activist attempts to disrupt or subvert mainstream cultural institutions or corporate advertising. Culture jamming is often seen as a form of subvertising. Many culture jams are simply aimed at exposing questionable political assumptions behind commercial culture so that people can momentarily consider the branded environment in which they live. Culture jams re-figure logos, fashion statements, and product images to challenge the idea of "what's cool," along with assumptions about the personal freedoms of consumption.

  • Culture jamming happens because ads cannot survive in a world of contrary messages; because that spurs thought, and thought interferes with buying. Look at the art for new cars: you never see another make of car in the ad. So to the extent that companies control the visuals in reality, buying activity is smoothened.

  • what is the original source of this? I would like to find it and watch it :)

  • we are all consumed by consumerism.

  • If this video caused even one idiotic 'tagger' to think a little more about how they will vandalize (maybe with some sort of 'message') in the future, then it was worth it. Vandalism will always exist, at least the girl was trying to be thought provoking.

  • Props to Queen St. W and Toronto overall.

  • That kid at 2:05 has a cigarette inside of a school! or I think it's a school

  • Late 60s and early 90s were great times. Once again, it has become grossly unpopular it is to question authority or stand up for political, feminist, environmental etc issues.

These youtube comments are a great example of this.

  • The CULTURE JAMS AT ME! She said it all. The Luddites throwing a wrench in the machinery. Christ Puncher!!!! I wonder how long it took for her to move on to the next trend in bullshit activism. Crying for cancer. Dancing away religion. Hugging race records? You ever notice that the amount of lisp you have dictates how much of a pompous asshole you are?

  • Man, that add really bugs me. I think it looked at me funny. That add needs to be deconstructed.

  • @DanChilly11 I can't afford pepsi. But I buy FAGO COLA and draw a pepsi logo on it and then RIP IT OFF!!! Makes me feel good.
