I'm creating a manuscript in a very old fashioned way. Starting with writing the individual folios before sewing them into quires and binding them to make a leatherbound codex.

Using calligraphy pens and ink wells on ivory parchment, and silk thread to bind them.

One sheet of paper folded in half gives me 4 pages to write on. Therefore, 6 sheets folded in half gives me 24 pages (6x4). That bundle of 24 pages is a quire. Four quires of 24 pages gives me 96 pages. I already know I'm going to need more quires now. Updates to follow.

  • So technically it's a folio, but you're starting with fairly small sheets, so it looks like it'll end up being the size of a normal octavo. I've shown you my folio, haven't I?

    That sounded dirty.

  • @Cadwaladr I haven't seen your folio before. If you can slide your folio into a PORTfolio... that would sound suggestive and dirty too

  • Dude. This is very cool. Nicely done.

  • Wow! Your keeping busy John and you pet is so cute :) good luck on your book.

  • @popparoc46 Part 3 - ... The tool that looked as though it had a carved ivory or bone handle. I would like to see that close up, please.

  • @popparoc46 Part 2 ... I wasn't creatively talented enough. I could copy other people's works, but couldn't create my own. It made me give up.

And, then, to the point of bookbinding, well, just fascinating! The leather bound book will be spectacular, one of a kind and even better than a moleskine!! How nice it would be to drop by and discuss this with you... AND, I would like to see the tool you flashed at 4:19 in the small wooden box with the slide lid - the box you said held pens. The .

  • Hi John. Normally when I am watching a video, I type my comment and listen/watch at the same time. You had me riveted and I had to wait to the end to type. This is fascinating to me. Thirty-five years ago I wanted to do the same thing on velum, but life interfered and the passion went by the wayside. What you are doing is going to be beautiful. And rare. And, now I know to whom to leave all my calligraphy supplies and books! I studied illumination for a while, but found I wasn't ...

  • Wow John that certainly is going to be a wonderful project. I hope you take us through all the steps. Hugs!

  • A hand written & hand bound user manual for software would be really trippy, but somehow the pens would need extra cleaning afterwards!

  • That is cool that is will be an icelandic based book....I have a friend who is icelanic:)
