Funny Cide gave America something to cheer about in 2003 as the first New York bred in history to win the Kentucky Derby. He went on to capture the Preakness Stakes winning easily by ten lengths. However, he lost by four lengths to Empire Maker in the Belmont. As he walked back towards the grandstand, the crowd continued to cheer for Funny Cide, "America's Horse," and boo the winner Empire Maker. Funny Cide's owner Barclay Tagg, after retiring Funny Cide, asked the owners if he could keep him and use him as a track pony. Funny Cide now spends his days on the backside at Gulfstream Park, a veteran of racing gazing on in the early hours of the day as other Derby hopefulls gallop past. People still come from all over the country to see Funny Cide, send Christmas presents and daily e-mails wondering how the "Big Horse" is doing. America's Horse is still in the spotlight and his presence on the track brings comfort to all that encounter him.

  • I still remember when Funny Cide won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 2003. This horse ran with a ton of heart!! Because during his 3yr.old season, Funny Cide had deal with the beast that was Empire Maker. Empire Maker had beaten Funny Cide in the Wood Memorial that year. But Funny Cide came back and turned the tables on him in the Kentucky Derby. Funny Cide went on to beat Midway Road in the Preakness. Then had his old nemesis, Empire Maker, deny him the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes.

  • and now he's resting at the kentucky horse park with cigar i think the magazine said they were BFFs
