In partnership with on-line volunteers of the Global Neighbour Network (nabuur.com), http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/butikiro SLINT-Uganda (www.slint.org) has assisted resource-poor farmers in Butikiro and Kiyuni villages to embark on fruit and vegetable growing as a strategic means to secure sustainable livelihoods. This has been through the Fruit and Vegetable Growing for Sustainable Livelihoods Project being implemented in Butikiro village, Gayaza sub-county, Kiboga district in Uganda. The project aims at enabling the participating farmers to secure sustainable incomes, food security, improved nutrition and employment opportunities.
As of today, we have assisted more than 50 households and over 400 people in the area have directly benefited from this initiative within the last two cropping seasons.
The project is currently supporting more than 50 households to grow and market fruits and vegetables. Farmers are being assisted to access improved seeds and to improve their capacities inter alia through technical training, provision of awareness materials, extension support and technical advice and facilitation of farmer group formation. It is also assisting farmers to improve their marketing strategies and access better markets for their produce. However in order for the project to realize its aim, at least US$ 6,000 is being sought to support project project activities in 2010. We thank you for your support and invite you to join us.
Brilliant work SLINT.
