  • what you should remember is that the maltese black cross is still in use today,no one complains and though the swastika will always be linked to hitlers germany, it is in fact an ancient symbol.indeed the finnish air force flew with a blue swastika symbol and they fought against the germans.Black 6 was not and is not a tribute to the Nazis but a tribute to the aircraft and the eventual victory of good over evil. The japanese still use the red circle(rising sun) emblem

  • Its at the RAF museum in Hendon.

My grandad helped restore it when he was in the RAF and was there when it crashed. He's died since but I've joined the RAF as a technican and I'm gonna fight tooth and nail to get black 6 flying again

  • ich bekomme jedesmal eine gänsehaut wenn ich diesen sound höre...einfach awesome

  • @BLACKSHACK16 I was in the RAF (MTD) i took all the parts to duxford when she was moved there.

  • @BOON601 i cant believe its 20 years since i was at Benson, my involvement was limited as i was a painter but i remember priming various bits for Russ. Where you R.A.F at the time or a civvy??

  • @BLACKSHACK16 me to i was one of the two guys who refueled her that day, was very sad to see her in the RAF Hendon museum last year rotting instead of being in the air.

  • @BLACKSHACK16, At least it was only a prop...hope nobody got hurt; only a few of you boys who put in the long hours doing it up, may have cried?! Still you boys (& girls?) did a great job of getting the old girl back on its feet again; the really sad part is that it was a beast of war....but as an aircraft we can appreciate it for just being that! I would love to see another air-race to celebrate the 100yrs since they raced over that 22 miles of water, that would be great! Cheers.

  • @anzac2404 i was part of the team that repainted the aircraft in 1990, i was based at R.A.F Benson in oxfordshire wher she had been restored over many years, i was there the day she took to the air for the first time, the prop was bent on take off and had to be sent back to germany for reworking,

  • @FiveCentsPlease, Thanks for the update, I was wondering what may have become of the old girl?! Hope that no one got hurt in the "back-flip"???

It was a shame to see, & hear of the planes of WW2 being taken down the end of one of the old defunkt airfields in the late 60's - early 70's & just burnt because they were not wanted or couldn't get buyer's for them; very sad end to noble aircraft...BUT NOW...getting anything, from clothing to machines is not only harder but costs a ton$! Cheers.

Hard to find parts are already being remade and the technology is available to make more. It's just horrendously expensive to do so for the low demand. Liability in aviation lawsuits also scare away many specialists who could make the parts. But I think we will continue to see a gradual increase in new parts as new technology makes manufacture easier.

Thankfully the crash was limited to flipping on it's back and it has been repaired. It's the only intact WWII example to fly and was only to fly for a short time before permanent display, where it is now. We currently have a total of 5 Me109s that are flying, with a few more on the way. Three of these began as post-war Spanish airframes that were converted to Me109 specifications while the other two are rebuilt from wreckage.
