Arms should be at shoulders width. For butterfly the most important thing is the undulation. Try not to think about kicking hard but rather just "feel" when you need to put pressure down. Once you get that then the rest will get better. Other things butterfly swimmers need to work on are shoulder and back flexibility and always think about arm extensions and head position whilst swimming. hope this helps (by no mean a comprehensive technical advice just some tips) :D
