One of the common flaws of the Deskjet 6840 is the mechanism that detects if the printer cover is up or down. There is a small plastic piece that is supposed to go up or down depending on if the cover is up or down. If this piece brakes, then you have to manually move this sensor with your finger so that the tray in front of the cartridge area will go down so you can change out the cartridges. This video shows you how to manually move this cover trigger.
