  • wow i sang with this guy in a Choir at Ashburton College NZ. Absolutely amazing!!!

    Debbie Tinomana (nee Austin)

  • We should keep in mind that more often than not, the great composers were in fact writing the lines for specific singers who would be performing that part and thus wrote in the key best suited to that singer, with the highs, lows and tessitura of that singer specifically in mind. In an opera it simply makes sense to keep it that way, but for recitals I don't think it's sacrilegious to change.

  • Overall, a nice sounding voice. But the transposition was wrong and unnecessary. The composer is always right!

  • @Operaphile You are only saying that because he is a kiwi ,I am from Nz its the same with everything here .take miss Westenra she is not rated by far as no1 but all you hear of here is her..meanwhile the no1 in her field has just reached the top of the American charts with 5 in the top twenty .

  • @12harby as we say in NZ, you're a f@$ken egg!

  • @Ashvegian I wouldn't worry about @12harby - check out his profile and you'll see he is a Katherine Jenkins fancier ahahahahahahahahaaaaaa. I have a packet of weetbix with higher artistic taste than that idiot. I was at Simon's recording of his EMI Wagner album in Wellington and he lifted the roof off with the NZSO. His attention to detail was phenomenal, his high notes ringing, and his voice far from "light". He has a very promising career and I hope he sings more Verdi!

  • The man is a magical singer with incredible charisma and a streak of simplicity which is so very endearing. Titanium balls.

  • If you think this is a typical lyric voice, you've never been in a rehearsal hall with him. It's deafening. Easily one of the biggest voices I've ever worked beside. It's not an Italianate large voice that one is used to hearing in Puccini. It's perfect for Wagnerian rep. It cuts like a laser. Knowing his voice up close, live vs. listening to this recording, he's able not sing much above a mezzo forte most of this piece. He really doesn't open up till the final repeats of 'Vincero.'

  • should he be singing this tuned down if he is a tenor?
