Actually, I'd say the biggest influence on Japan's musical style were probably the Japanese synth-pop band Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), which Japan had a very close relationship, often with members from both bands frequently collaborating with each other.

@LeBonGirl007 Exactly. Bowie, Roxy Music and The New York Dolls influenced Japan. Japan and Roxy Music influenced Duran Duran. Duran Duran have influenced Blur, Franz Ferdinand and so many other modern acts. Blur themselves have probably influenced other acts as well. Everything goes in a circle...
