Later this year, Virgin CEO and global adventurer Richard Branson will commence a series of five dives in a specially-designed submarine with the capability of reaching depths of over 36,000 feet. The first dive will make Branson and copilot Chris Welsh the first men to reach the Mariana trench--the deepest point on earth. During each of the dives the submarine will be mapping and submitting data on the ocean floor for Google Earth, Google's free 3-D mapping software, as well as scientists from USC, the University of Hawaii, University of Alaska, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California.

Take our poll: where would you rather travel: to space or the Mariana trench?

  • It is unexplored, kind of, but a human has been there. The Trieste (a navy bathyscaphe) did it in 1960, but basically just went down to the bottom and came back up again. It will be interesting though!

  • @EngineeringIsMagic Good info, thanks for the correction.

  • Explore the bermuda triangle ! Haha

  • So capitalists and one percenters that are cool are okay. Like Branson and Jobs and Obama. I get it.

  • Must be made from carbon fibre.... But what's the window made from?

  • Trench! You'll see new animals and space is just all black and boring.

  • This is just the official video with some guys talking and no extra details. Better to just go to the homepage and watch it there.

  • I'd be way to scared to go down to the mariana trench or challenger deep in a vessel. What if the power failed and we couldnt go back up to the surface? We'd be stuck 7 miles under the ocean with no one to save use. Also, being someplace where the pressure is 16,000 psi would scare the ish out of me. All it takes is one thing to go wrong before i got crushed in 1/1000th of a second. Im fascinated by the ocean, but not enough to explore miles under the water.

  • Seems the big advantage to Sir Richards sub is the loss of 'Down Time'. The Subs used to visit Titanic and other deep Sea Tourist destinations are very slow and spend most of their working life blowing bubbles going down. Sir Richards Sub zips down as fast as a stone with little 'Down Time'. If you are a rich Tourist fast travel is what you want, and in the end, it is the customer who decides what kind of machine is used.

  • krasheninnikov (died 1993) predicted that atlantis is underneath mariana trench. see my vid for more info.

  • Chris Welsh will be piloting the sub to Sirena Deep/Mariana Trench...not Richard Branson.

  • Def the marianas trench
