Though you could make it in everything in side Mudbox, what Noobdles is saying is that you shouldn't for 2 reasons. 1. Your line flow is going to be complete shit and your going to have to retopo after... and 2. Its time consuming and is pretty hard if your just starting out with the program. So it is best to make the basic Geo in a modeling pack, then import it into Mudbox or Z-brush and use these tools for detail and texturing.
@GranDaddiPurp You can make the basic shape in pretty much anything as long as your staying with Autodesk. I haven't used Inventor personally but Autodesk does like to pride itself being able to transfer files from one program to another with moderate ease. This is what Obj. File formats are for. Look around for a vid. that explains how to do this. Its not hard to understand and once you do you'll be able to transfer files from most programs into others.

I must say, after about a week of using this program for a hobby I must say it is the easiest Autodesk product I have used except for sketchbook.
