Despite reforms and deregulation, the Indian government could still loosen their control in several sectors.

  • I don't know how India can be called a healthy or strong economy when half the countries children are literally starving. To me this is proof that capitalism doesn't work.

  • this is a direct result of the reduction or removal of rural loan credits the government used to give to farmers. now that the government has taken a more "laissez-faire" approach by stopping farmer aid and allowing the sharks in, suicide rates have lept. When the harvest fails, so all a farmer can do is tell his family, "sorry, we can't eat this year, oh, and I owe this guy hundreds of rupees, so we are going to be homeless too."

  • its unfortunate that we can't post links in youtube comments, so all I can do is quote.

"The Lancet has published an authoritative study on suicides in southern India in its April edition. The study says the suicide rates among young men and women in southern India are the highest in the world."

Apparently, the Self-Employed are the largest group who commit suicides, 24%, and farmers 3rd, at 15%. Both usually do this because of harassment by loan sharks when they can't pay back.

  • is an Indian person happier farming their own parcel of land for themselves and their family or are they happier as wage slaves, renting out their bodies, time, and youth for some enormous business? you'd have to ask them, but I think the soaring rural suicide rates speak for themselves.

  • get real, businesses invest in wherever they put do business for a reason. India doesn't have a great infrastructure, though its improving its schools and colleges aren't first rate yet, there's only one good reason to move business over to India- the labor. Its cheap and easy to exploit. Also, median incomes have stagnated or decreased in the US since 1975 as has the standard of living. The standard of living in the US have REGRESSED back to 1960 levels. give me a couple hours for some stats.

  • "Whether India is an emerging superpower or not has no relation to the quality of living for the poor, the farmers, the homeless"

Are the poor people of America living in the same conditions compared to India? The poor people here are significantly better here than they are in India. So yes, there is a relationship between the poor people of a superpower vs. that of a 3rd world country. Not saying that India is a 3rd world country.

  • You can't expect companies to pay Indian workers as much as they pay American workers. The wage of the Indian worker may seem small to you but you have to ask the Indian worker. Is he happy? Is he better off now or before the company got there? Also, where are the statistics that you talk about?

  • "they don't have to pay Indian workers as much or treat them as well".

compared to what? Are you comparing Indian workers to American workers? If so you are wrong. The United States has 200+ year history of economic freedom. The wages have gone up as standard of living has gone up. India's standard of living is very low compared to that of the United States.

  • I have family that went to India a month ago. Either way, its statistics that matter, not random anecdotes. Whether India is an emerging superpower or not has no relation to the quality of living for the poor, the farmers, the homeless. Also, the large companies are moving to India to take advantage of the fact that they don't have to pay Indian workers as much or treat them as well, or keep the workplace as safe, etc. They are *exploiting* Indians.

  • Is that so? So why is India considered an emerging superpower? Have your gone to India lately? Have you seen riksha drivers with cellphones?? What about the foreign companies moving to India which is allowing more and more average Indians to find work? Where the hell did you get your information?
