Meyer Davis' Swanee Syncopators, voc. Eddy Thomas (Smith Ballew) - My Old Girl's My New Girl Now, Brunswick 1928

NOTE: Meyer DAVIS was not a bandleader in the normal sense. He was basically a supplier of orchestras for "society" galas, debutante coming-out parties, Presidential Balls and such. Meyer could have several 'pick-up' bands out on dates at the same time. High Society loved him and he prospered catering to society. Meyer was active all throughout the 1920s, in fact his orchestras was so successful that ca. 1926, he was able to purchase 'The Willow Grove Park' in Pennsylvania, where his own orchestra often performed for dances at the Park. To amuse his patrons, Davis added many new innovations including performances by elephants, a tropical fish exhibition, a 'Perfect Foot Contest' sponsored by the Chiropody Society of Pennsylvania, the 'Inez Wood Diving Nymphs', balloon rides and even performances by other bands such as Paul Whiteman's. Meyer also led the orchestra for director Otto Preminger's 1962 film "Advise and Consent", starring Charles Laughton, Henry Fonda, and an all-star cast.

  • Your videos are always such a pleasure to watch!

    And GREAT songs, too!!!

  • Hi, that song is rather little known but its arrangement and vocal are just great. In 1920s America had two such semi-bandleaders who - despite their true love for music - were more occupied with renting the musicians and rising good money on music business. And both played excellent jazzy dance music. One was Meyer Davis, the other was Goldkette

  • Great music, song, vocalist and images.

  • Thats so great, hear it every day!

  • Believe it or not ..I used to drive Hilda Davis around as a widow in her 80's....She was the wife of Meyer Davis....They owned a summer home in Sorrento, Maine, where I was born......

  • That was delightful, and loved your video too. Those late 20s and early 30s orchestra sounds really get to me - - I'm wild about them. My favorite is still "Miss You" from 1929. Thanks for sharing this great music from the Jazz Age and Depression years. Tommy
