I was at Jiffy Lube # 2118 (aka Atlanta Lubes One, LLC) today and they changed the oil and rotated the tires on my vehicle. After that, I drove 3.6 miles home.

As I was driving down my street, I heard a loud periodic thud noise that sounded like it was coming from one of the tires with each rotation of the wheel. Two of my neighbors, Hugh and Beth, were out walking and they confirmed visually there was something very wrong with the tire.

I pulled into my driveway, and another neighbor, Steve, pointed out with great surprise to all of us:

"Look at THAT!! The wheel is supposed to have six lug nuts attaching it to the vehicle, and there are only TWO lug nuts there!! Four of the lug nuts are missing!! That's very dangerous. If you were on the interstate at a higher speed, the wheel could have fallen off, and you could have been killed!!"

As you can imagine, I'm not happy about this.

I immediately called the store. The assistant manager says that the employee who worked on the vehicle says that he attached the lug nuts and tightened them. However, I say that is not likely, because if he had done that, then 4 of the 6 lug nuts wouldn't have fallen off in just a 3.6 mile drive home on back roads. I believe that he either didn't put the lug nuts on; or if he did put them on, he didn't tighten them.

Apart from this being a customer service problem that's now going to take a long time to get worked out, this is a very serious safety issue.

If I hadn't noticed the problem, and had been driving on the interstate at 55 or 65 mph, I believe the wheel could have come right off the vehicle at high speed. I think that could have gotten me and others injured or even killed!!

Jiffy Lube is on their way to my house now with lug nuts to attach. Then we are going to drive back to Jiffy Lube to have them inspect the vehicle to see if there is any damage to the vehicle that may have occurred during the drive from their shop to my house.

I will update this report as I get more information.

  • WOW !!! Scary stuff to see, what the 'trusted professionals' allow to go on at their shops ! Makes one wonder sometimes if we'll have to ask them if they have security cameras in the garage area, to keep them accountable.

  • @BatmanProject777 This location actually does have cameras monitoring the work of their mechanics. The manager on duty told me she reviewed the video, and she said that she thinks the mechanic loosened the lug nuts on the wheel instead of tightening them. Indeed, scary stuff.

  • jiffy lube dont hire pros they hire people out of high school, thugish people. You have to go to school to learn the basics to do things right.

  • Brother had one come off at 60 mph, came off in a construction zone. Buzzed right by a group of workers. In your case, I used to own a tire shop, I'd recommend replacing every one of those studs.

  • DONT DRIVE WITH THAT RIM ON...THE LUG STUD HOLES ARE EGG SHAPED WHICH MEANS YOU NEED A NEW RIM AND PROBABLY SOME NEW STUDS

  • If i was you id drive the car until the wheel fell off then go back and sue their asses lol

  • They Did not tighten the lug nuts and that's what happens. Make sure the holes in the rim did not get damaged ware the studs go thru and look at studs also. Like you said you will have it checked out. Good Idea.

  • if that was a front wheel and you had to do an emergency stop the two are not enough to take the torque and most likely would have broken.

  • Just by looking at it.... you need 4 (possibly all 6 in the other 2 are loose) new studs and a new rim... The loose lugs caused the holes in the rim to elongate...

  • That is why I do it myself!!!!!!

  • they only put them on 1-2 threads and put two of them all the way down but still loose, and your wheel is ruined due too the lug holes being ovled

  • Jiffy Lube hires the biggest shit heads on the planet and I happened to know one of them awhile back and he said if the oil in the motor was still good they would'nt change it and still charge the cars owner for the work how fucked up is that shit.
