Ecological Race Car a Star at Genevas 81st International Motor Show

The International Motor Show began last Thursday in Geneva, Switzerland. The usual luxury and conventional cars are on display. But this year, many "green" vehicles were proving to be popular. Our correspondent in Geneva files this report.

For 10 days, the 81st International Motor Show is on at the Palexpo Hall in Geneva, Switzerland. This annual event is one of the biggest motor shows in the world.

This year, an entire pavilion is especially dedicated to green vehicles. Several stands display cars with some ecological advantages, like being electricity-powered or having an aerodynamic shape.

One of the most remarkable engines was conceived by two men, Franck Loacker and Tobias Wülser.

[Frank Loacker, Engineer]:
"We made a project with this cabin motorcycle, and we just came back from our 80-day global tour, just with electric power, and it's actually a world premiere. It's the first time an electric vehicle went around the world with electricity in 80 days."

The two engineers weren't short of energy supplies, even in remote regions.

[Frank Loacker, Engineer]:
"It was never a big problem because electricity is everywhere. When you see people living in their houses they have electricity most of the time. When you see a fuel station, those have electricity. We just go there and ask, it's quite simple"

[Tobias Wülser, Designer]:
"Yeah, it was a dream of mine, to travel with an electric car around the world... Oh yeah, we had lots of different things to tell. Special moments like in China where people were looking at us, children were waving and pointing towards the car. They thought, 'oh maybe it's a UFO that's coming towards us.' But they know this is the future and they look forward to it."

Driving an electric vehicle is now accessible to more and more people, but some will have to wait a little longer before deciding what car they want to drive.
