The life in pictures of HM King James VII of Scotland and II of England. Son of the martyred King Charles I and younger brother of King Charles II he came to the throne of the 3 kingdoms in 1685 when his brother died with no legitimate heirs. He started out on shaky ground as there had long been attempts by the Protestants at court to have him excluded from the succession following his conversion to Catholicism but his brother refused. James II would be the last Catholic to sit on the British throne. He defeated a republican attempt at rebellion led by the Duke of Monmouth but he encouraged the wrath of powerful Protestants by his efforts to enact religious toleration and his promotion of Catholics. After the birth of his son he was overthrown in 1688 by a Protestant coup after an invasion by the Dutch led by his son-in-law William of Orange. He tried to restore himself first in the Kingdom of Ireland but was defeated at the epic battle of the Boyne. He spent the rest of his life in exile.

  • It's not true that the Monmouth Rebellion was "republican" as you say. Monmouth was himself a claimant to the throne.

  • He was, but look more into his supporters and the clique behind the whole thing -Cromwellian republicans dominated the leadership.

  • Is the Gregorian chant in honor of his Catholic faith?

  • Pretty much (it also worked lengthwise and was okay with Youtube -those are the biggest requirements). It's Catholic and Irish and James II will always be associated with the two.

  • god bless James II the only King myself and many Irish would ever be loyal to

  • @MadMonarchist they were commonwealthmen

  • Singing psalms made up a large part of the life in a monastic community, while a smaller group and soloists sang the chants. In its long history, Gregorian chant has been subjected to many gradual changes and some reforms.

  • The resulting body of music is the first to be notated in a system ancestral to modern musical notation. In general, the chants were learned by the viva voce method, that is, by following the given example orally, which took many years of experience in the Schola Cantorum. Gregorian chant originated in monastic life, in which celebrating the 'Divine Office' eight times a day at the proper hours was upheld according to the Rule of St. Benedict.

  • Gregorian chant is the central tradition of Western plainchant, a form of monophonic liturgical music within Western Christianity that accompanied the celebration of Mass and other ritual services. It is named after Pope Gregory I, Bishop of Rome from 590 to 604, who is traditionally credited for having ordered the simplification and cataloging of music assigned to specific celebrations in the church calendar.

  • God bless James II and VII

  • Though Catholic, James pressed parliament for religious tolerance in England and was rebuffed. A pity that to this day, an English King or Queen is defacto "head of the church", and cannot be anything but an Anglican. I pray that someday the established church will be disenfranchised. James may have the last laugh yet.
