What civil liberties exactly would an ID card dissolve? Why are they any different to a vehicle license plate? A passport?

An ID card is technically proven to be more so difficult to fake, thus reducing ID fraud; which incidentally is at it's height. It has been elected by the British public in the last TWO general elections and would aid the police immeasurably by reducing multiple agency involvement. That's just for starters

Here in the USA, some of the states have pushed back pretty strongly against a national ID card. New Hampshire (what we libertarians like to call the "free state") has passed legislation through both houses (and the governor promises to sign it) that would ban New Hampshire from participating in ANY national ID card.
