328. Wolverton Mountain (Claude King & Merle Kilgore)

This ballad launched Claude King's career in the US in 1962. Apparently it was based on a real character who lived on Woolverton Mountain in Arkansas. Johnny Horton and George Jones supposedly declined the chance to record the song. If so it was a bad decision. Claude King decided to record it himself and the song was at the top of the US charts for nine weeks.

Yes I dated Claude in 1962 I was 19 I worked at Margie's dance land. I met him

playing pool.this was in Longview Tx. he was a real gentleman of course

I was young and pretty then I dated him several times.no sex.it was a differnt

time than people act.than now day.s !

Please to see this on youtube and that you have the story right about it being about a real life man. My grandmother and grandfather were both raised up with Clifton. He lived to be 103. It was a sad day for my grandmother she was 99 at the time of his passing. He was the last friend living that she had grown up with. She passed also at the age of 103. Grandma now rest on Wolverton Mountain.

To Raymondccrooke/ I did not know at the time I dated Claude that he was 19 yrs.

older than me.because he was good looking did not look his age.he would sing

for me! one time he went to the sheriff home in Gilmer Tx. and the sheriff gave him

a bottle of whiskey.
