William Shatner knows firsthand how dangerous turkey fryers can be—so do the firefighters with the Illinois Fire Service, who staged some of the common mistakes, with explosive results.

Safe Turkey Frying Tips
1: Avoid oil spillover--don't overfill the pot.
2: Turn off flame when lowering the turkey into oil.
3: Fry outside, away from the house.
4: Properly thaw the turkey before frying.
5: Keep a grease-fire-approved extinguisher nearby.

speaking of dumb, having the propane tank next to the fire you are purposely causing and furthermore standing next to it.

@TheCrawdaddy029, Indeed, that would be a major fire hazard, although the firefighters in this video used an empty tank as a prop. They actually set up a hidden propane line which they could shut off at a distance.

One other safety point: Don't overheat the oil. Once that oil gets to it's smoke point it can self-ignite.

@joezasada, True. We saw that happen during this shoot, when the oil was above 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Not true fried turkey isn't the same as fried potatoes or other meat, it's flash fried and the oil doesn't seep into the meat as you think

I have the infrared turkey fryer and it uses no oil. The turkey tastes just like it is fried and is delicious and safer than an oil fryer !!
