Well, after deciding to practice EoSD's Stage 4, I had the crazy idea of making a video that showcases all of Patchy's Lunatic cards. This would not only give me an excuse to capture cards like Emerald Megalith, but it would also provide me ample Stage 4 practice.

Patchy's cards are all pretty damn tough (well, most of them), making her a consistently difficult boss. Depending on your character, you will get a different assortment of 5 spell cards (ReimuA definitely has the easiest time here); a few are ridiculously easy, others difficult, and some are plain bullshit. Luckily, it was nothing an evening of playtime couldn't stop. This video orders the cards in numerical order based on their Spell Card number:

Spell Card 20: Fire Sign "Agni Shine High Level

Here's a fun one. Yeah, the fire sprites are ugly looking, and I don't really understand their hitboxes, but this card leaves a lot of openings. They spiral pretty fast and they start off really low making things a bit claustrophobic, but it isn't that tough. Dodging at the corners of the screen could probably make things easier if you're having trouble.

Spell Card 21: Wood Sign "Sylphae Horn High Level"

Bullshit. This card is difficult, random, and stupid. Even worse is that Patchy stays centered, and you only get this card if you are MarisaA. In other words, you have to stay centered as well in order to do damage, and this isn't always possible thanks to the hellish curvature of all the bullets that want nothing more than to make you mash the bomb button.

Spell Card 22: Earth Sign "Rage Trilithon High Level"

This card is really easy. Lot's of openings, and it has a moderate pace. However, as with any other simple card, don't let it catch you off guard.

Spell Card 23: Fire Sign "Agni Radiance"

It's Agni Shine slowed down with more fire balls and now with red bubble bullets. The slow down is nice, but the increased density and the fact that the red bubbles slow down means that many openings can now get cut off. Definitely one of her bullshit cards, albeit, failure here is more avoidable compared to her other bullshit cards.

Spell Card 24: Water Sign "Bury In Lake"

Oh hey, lasers around me, oh, easy bullets, oh what the shit. The blue bubble spam is aimed at you and fired right as Patchy moves, so if she moves in a very unfavorable way, you better pray you get lucky with your hitbox. This is one of her bullshit cards.

Spell Card 25: Wood Sign "Green Storm"

It's like Sylphae Horn but funner! Much less dense, bullets travel in recognizable directions, and staying centered is challenging without bullshit characteristics.

Spell Card 26: Earth Sign "Trilithon Shake"

This one is basically a carbon copy of Rage Trilithon, but now with aimed yellow bubble bullets that are fired every half second or so. This requires you to move quite a bit around the screen, and as long as you keep your eye open, the card isn't too problematic. In my runs, however, I trapped myself more than I could ever imagine. Whatever.

Spell Card 27: Metal Sign "Silver Dragon

Some of the cards that appear on Lunatic also appear on Normal (or even Easy) for select characters. This one is exclusive to Hard/Lunatic. I have no clue why. This is Patchy's easiest card, and hell, even Rumia puts up more of a fight.

Spell Card 28: Fire & Earth Sign "Lava Cromlech"

Say it with me, "Cromlech." I actually really like this cards design, it's fun to play. Not too hard, not too easy, just right.

Spell Card 29: Wood & Fire Sign "Forest Blaze"

Similar to Green Storm, but easier. Don't let this card kick you out of position. Having all the bullets stream diagonally to the bottom left corner may make you want to move in that direction as well, and that's exactly what Patchy wants.

Spell Card 30: Water & Wood Sign "Water Elf"

Value your safety over staying below Patchy. I died a lot to this one because I was stubborn and wanted to damage her at all times :P

Spell Card 31: Metal & Water Sign "Mercury Poison"

Biggest mistake you don't want to make here is to hug the very bottom. You need to have some room in order to make vertical movements downward, of which will most likely be necessary at least once. A fun card, basically a beefed up version of Alice's opening non-card.

Spell Card 32: Earth & Metal Sign "Emerald Megalith"

The infamous Emerald Megalith. Not only is it bullshitty, but it's also considered to be one of the toughest cards in the series. I really don't know what to say about it: the card likes to form walls, it likes to trap you, and it likes to force you through tight and dangerous spaces.

Oh, and as a bonus, I threw in a clip of me surviving the books without dying or using a bomb. When you play Stage 4 this much, I guess it's bound to happen at least once.

  • 2 things.

I'm always glad when I get one of Patchy's Fire spells...I find them so much easier than any of her others (silver dragon excluded).

Why is it whenever you watch someone else's runthroughs that spell cards seem easy, but when you play it you just cant seem to find those openings you see in videos?

Very nice with that, I normally bomb my way through the books. 5/5

  • Games in general seem to appear easier when watching videos because you get to follow the player's movement path, of which moves directly into openings that they spot--sometimes before you do, and sometimes after.

Also, don't get me wrong, I almost always bomb through the books too. Way too risky.

  • why is the charicter have pokeballs

  • Is it just me or is Rage Trilithon harder than Rage Trilithon High Level (on normal). And the Reason Silver Dragon is hard/lunatic specific is because it's a Metal Fatigue upgrade. On normal onwards each of the shot types get one of the elements for the first card, then a different one for the second at one level higher (high level). The 3rd card is always the first two "combined". On hard/lunatic both the first 2 cards move 1 level up. I can't find any pattern for the 4th and 5th spells though

  • Dem Sylphae leaves...

  • @P3RMABANN3D not pokeballs, but yin yang...

  • So who has the easiest patchy fight anyways? Probably ReimuA...

  • I love Touhou!!! x3

It's one of the best games I've ever played! x3

    and I love Patchouli! xDDDD

  • I agree about Sylphae Horn High Level, and I'm only trying to 1cc the game on Hard right now. At least Emerald Megalith is relatively easy on Hard.

  • Foolish human, she would have gone easier on you if you were Marissa (yuri joke... ACTIVATE!)

Wow, good job. You really rock... I can barley pass on easy. *jealousy*

  • This, this seems like it could have taken a long time......

and the books at the end........*shudders*
