The Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisation is to donate $1bn to immunise children against life-threatening diseases in Africa.

Pneumonia and diarrhoea are responsible for more child deaths than any other diseases - between them perhaps half a million each year across the continent.

But relief has come to those most at risk. The programme will cover 37 countries, tackling illnesses that many reside as facts of life to be endured, rather than diseases that are preventable.

Peter Greste reports from Nairobi, Kenya.
