Historic Storm Strikes U.S. East Coast

A week-long heat wave and an upper level disturbance over Chicago combined to spawn an historic storm featuring a rare and destructive phenomenon known as a derecho. A derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to that of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath. As a result, the term "straight-line wind damage" sometimes is used to describe derecho damage. By definition, if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles (about 400 kilometers) and includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph (93 km/h) or greater along most of its length, then the event may be classified as a derecho. This movie shows imagery from the GOES East satellite starting at 0015Z on June 29, 2012 and ending 2345Z on June 30, 2012.

I live in Wetzel county, it got hit very hard too. Man, that storm looks like one huge blood clot as it comes over us.

Look over my state of West Virginia. It just blew us off the map here!!!! We were without power for 14 days, and it was unreal!!!! No power, no hot water, no way to cook but by propane grill, NO ICE, my God ice was the new gold here, no way to pump gasoline. It was closest to an Apocalypse as I have ever come. Blew 12 trees down in my yard also, not to mention huge transmission line laying near my property as well. What devastation!!!!

the storm was rough very rough but the heat wave that followed was a killer 6 days without power was hard and i can't imagine how hard it was for people who had it off for longer

Danm, I thought our power was gonna be out for a whole week after It cut off friday 29th. We stayed at my bros place for power and luck has It our power came on july 3rd around morning thank god! There still folks without power some places tho.. I somehow disliked the vid on accident being click happy waiting for the page to load .. sorry about that. -_-
