Brilliant lyrics. I can totally relate to this. You sit there worrying about the past while your life passes you by more and more. You look back on each yesterday or yesteryear with regret while another one goes by, then you mourn that one and another passes by and it goes on and on and it becomes a vicious cycle. I've lived a life filled with regrets and missed opportunites and it's fucking hell. I'd just like to die in my sleep somedays.

It's a baseball metaphor, I guess. With the "catcher" being time that is catching up to the man and woman in the song who have not acted upon their love for one another. It seems a song about missed opportunities. The "catcher" = the time clock on going for an opportunity. The verse after the solo seems to be man looking back on the missed opportunity many years later with regret.
