I have several clients that have tried it and are still using this approach.
You might be right under the following circumstances: If you are in a Market Place / location that attracts a "certain type of customer"....the one you most likely are referring to, YES, this type of clientele could fit in to the category that you are referring to.
Either way: if you can just get people in the door, and you are GREAT at what you do....you will benefit hugely from this technique.

Giving away free haircuts will attract low value customers (cheapskates) who will not necessarily be repeat customers and will just wait for the next promotion. It would be better to charge $75 but throw in a bunch of free hair products. Referrals are a good idea.
