A practical chess ending with queen and pawn. Learn the technique of winning with queen against king and pawn. This ending is often drawn when the superior side doesn't understand what is called for in the position. Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the technique and you will win with confidence.

  • Hey oldchap, I just wanted to say that I think you do the best job at helping people develop their game. Other videos are good but they just simply show lines and variations, but you show someone how to think more clearly and I hope to see more videos from you! Thanx...

P.S. where do you play chess online at? I like chesscube.

  • Thanks a lot. That is one of the nicest comments anyone has ever left for me. It's good to know the effort is appreciated, and I hope that people are indeed helped by watching these videos. I don't really play blitz; mostly correspondence chess these days. I should checkout chess cube though - it is gaining a lot of popularity and seems to be a polished website.

  • Good video. I think it would be fun to try the same with the pawn on c2 instead of e2! You get a cheeseburger if you win that game if black plays correctly! :-P

  • Dude! The last thing I need is another cheeseburger. At the end of the video I showed the f2/c2 pawn idea. Thanks for watching!

  • I say old chap, It would be a crime for white to end up with a draw in this position. Good instruction and another very good commentary. Thx

  • A crime indeed, but believe me it does happen, . A long time ago I lost the defensive side of this ending with a c pawn since I overlooked the stalemate opportunity. The more concrete positions you understand in chess the better. This is a good one to know. It always surprises me how many people do not know these basic endings, but I guess studying openings and combinations is more appealing. Endgames are like some wines - you have to develop a taste for the them. Thanks for watching, roaddog!!

  • Ah, sorry. i didnt watch the whole video because i already knew the technic.

  • Exactly. It requires some schematic thinking to realize the right plan. If you don't know what you are doing though, it would be easy to overstep the 50 move draw rule.

  • many many moves but all forced if one knows this technique
