Making a Mold and Casting of a Human Hand Using Alja-Safe Alginate from Smooth-On.

Step One: Measure and Mix
Mix Ratio: 1 part Alja-Safe to 1 part water by volume. Add first cup of Alja-Safe and begin mixing. Add second and third cups of Alja-Safe. Mix to a creamy consistency, no lumps.

Step Two: Pose Hand and Immerse Slowing into the Alja-Safe
Wet the model's hand before placing it into the Alja-Safe. Keep hand 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) above the bottom of the container. Let Alja-Safe set for 8-10 minutes, until solid.

Step Three: Demold
Slowly and carefully remove hand. Removing the model too fast may result in a tear in the mold. Ready to cast.

Step Four: Casting into the Alja-Safe Mold with Smooth-Cast 300Q Ultra-Fast Urethane Resin
Apply Universal Release Agent. Dispense Part A. Dispense Part B. Combine both parts in mixing container. Mix thoroughly. Rotate mold to minimize air entrapment. Plastic will cure in less than one minute.

Step Five: Demold the Resin Casting
Perfectly detailed reproduction. Apply primer. Apply paint.

  • Can you lessen the cure time because I am trying to mold my Head.. I don't think I can last for 8 to 10 minutes...

  • @gianboy2001 When making a mold of a face, air holes are generally left in the nostrils as shown in our video called "Life Casting: How to Make a Mold of Your Face with Alginate"

  • When it says dispense part A and B.. what is it?

  • @Louisa522 A and B refer to the 2 components pf the Smooth Cast 300Q resin.

  • is it possible to make a reusable, silicone mold from the finished product?

  • @FilAsians Yes, you can re-mold the casting using Mold Max, Mold Star or Rebound 25 silicone.

  • question: ok so in this video we learn how to make a solid hand. How would you go about making a hollow hand that could be worn as a glove?

  • wow thats so cool!

  • Id like to make a mold and cast of my hands and ive checked your website, but im unsure if the alginate and casting plaster starter kid has enough alginate to make a mold for two hands, one holding the other at the wrist. the free hand is in a semi-open pose and the seconds holding the first's wrist does not need to be fully molded up to the wrist, so long as all of the fingers are molded and able to be casted. Is what comes in the starter kit enough to do the job?
