Gotta make sure there are no bubbles in the garden hose, if the hose goes up n down it will trap a bubble and you won't get a correct reading. There is a commercial product on the market ($18) that does this but you figured it on your own.

I used this technique my first year. Since then I purchased a tri-pod laser. Just stake out your area and shoot the laser from stake to stake. But nice demo video
