Sailor is a 1961 Hit song by Petula Clark. My friend Ann introduced me to this song in 2008. Thanks Ann, I just love it. As an ex Royal Australian Navy sailor - I have memories of sailing away from loved ones. The black and white photos in this Music Video were taken by various members of the Royal Australian Navy Photographic Branch (including myself). I served in the R.A.N. Photographic Branch from 1961 to 1972.

At lights out on the Melbourne they used to play something like "Goodnight Sweetheart" - can't remember the female singer but it was sexy!

  • @ponytopgun Hi Pony, mate. Thanks for your comment. Yes this music video is getting lots of views from people in Australia and the UK. It's popular with all the mothers, girlfriends, ex-girlfriends and wives of sailors. I think the song (still one of my all time favorites) is the main attraction and the photos of our Aussie navy in action in the 1960's helps to illustrate the song and bring back memories for us ex-sailors. Cheers, mate.

  • Where I come from in England this song is often refered to as the local national anthem, so many people and familys were connected with the sea in one way or another, fantastic shots of the Royal Australian Navy.

  • As an ex merchant navy officer I am very disappointed that not one single image is shown of a merchant navy vessel. Remember there are more merchant navy sailors at sea at any time compared to navy vessels. The merchant marine keeps the worlds economy moving.

  • Met my first girlfriend in Norway in 1961 and when I sang this song to her, she was mine. I was her Sailor. It was our song. I was on an adventure across Northern Europe having just graduated from Durham University UK. Next I met a beautiful German girl from Bremen and nearly 50 years later we are still happily married. But this song reminds me powerfully of my first love. I often wonder what happened to her. Thanks for the post.
