This scene re-creates the events that led up to the execution of thirteen German men, the leaders of the so-called Ehrenfelder Gruppe. The Ehrenfelder Gruppe was a rare example of armed German resistance to the Nazi state. The group emerged in the heavily bombed Ehrenfeld district of Cologne during the late summer of 1944. The group was comprised of former members of the local Edelweißpiraten, German deserters and black marketers who were conspiring with Eastern European forced labourers. The group distributed anti-Nazi leaflets, stole ration cards to feed those in hiding and derailed ammunition trains headed for the Western front. The group was responsible for the death of a guard and a local Hitler Youth leader. There were plans to blow up the Gestapo headquarters. After a mad drive-by through Colognes bombed out ruins the Gestapo finally located and crushed the group in early October 1944. Thirteen men were publicly hanged before 1,000 onlookers On November 10, 1944.

Sehr guter Film aus einer ungewöhnlichen Sichtweise (Unterschicht im 3. Reich). Und Ivan Stebunov spielt alle an die Wand!!! Mehr von ihm könnt ihr in der ebenfalls ausgezeichneten russischen Serie "Kursanty" (2004) sehen, in der er einen russischen Kadetten im 2. Weltkrieg spielt, der in einem Schnellkurs für Stalingrad ausgebildet wird. Auch da war er großartig!

@dwilmer7 this is a german accent spoken in and near Cologne, it is called "kölsch" and sounds even strange to us too, when we were grown up in the North of Germany or in Bavaria...

@dwilmer7 : actually, it's german, but the "edelweisspiraten" were rebels from/in cologne. so all of them had sort of an accent. it called "kölsch" and sounds a bit like drunken german :)
