  • Very interesting! I was a machinist for 20 years working with metals and this is way different. After you turned the work piece around the first thing I would have done was face it off, cleaned off all the bark and made a flat face on it, Then start hollowing it out. From what you have shown I would have been wrong. I just got my first wood lathe (Jet 1014 VS) and this is going to be more different than I thought. ;-)

  • hey - it's not different, it's just a choice we made - we hope you learn to be a better woodturner because of it - in the end, you make your own choices! Have fun!

  • Thanks for posting this. I went home last night and made this bowl. Your instructions for hollowing out the inside were very good. With the resolutions that you get on YouTube, it is difficult to see the orientation of the tool and where the bevel is. Perhaps you could paint a line on the end of the handle so that you can see how you turn to tool. At 4:40 you can clearly see the end.

Again ... thanks for posting this. More like these please.

  • Thanks for the comment - great suggestion. In the future we may try to do that to make things easier for everyone to see. If you look at the video now - the logo on the handle follows the hollow of the blade. Thanks again!

  • No problem - This project is not that "easy" but once you have a basic mastery of your lathe, you should be able to do a project like this too.

  • @Vicriderforlife I think perhaps he was making a 'natural edge bowl.'

  • It's been 3 years or so since I posted my comment so now I get why he left the bark on the piece. It was to make a natural edge bowl. What confused me was I didn't hear him say anything about making it a natural edge bowl. But, although its been 3 years I still ain't got that smooth move down for cutting the inside of the bowl. Every time I just about get it my tool catches and takes out a big chunk ruining the piece.

  • @ColoradoHermit No, you're right. This guy doesn't know what he's doing. WHY he hollowed it out with the bark is beyond me. He should have faced it off beforehand. Go ahead and trust your 20 years of metalworking rather than some dude on youtube.

  • Do you guys have a video on making a usable baseball bat. if not i would love it if you guys would make a video on how to make one on the lathe.

  • i seem to have a big problem with tearing endgrain with my bowls, then i have to powersand to get it out but it doesnt always work

  • Thanks Jet! The instructors discussion of how to hollow was very useful and the camera angles showed me how to attack a bowl.

I have made many pens and this along with some other resources encourage me to make some bowls.

And since I had a fig tree drop in the yard recently, I have a virtually endless supply of wood to practice with.

    Midgets are nice people, Than
