The sad truth is that a lot of misinformed people call religions they don't understand "paganism". The fact is, and I hate to make a generalization, but it is mostly Christians that say this, mainly because early Christianity emphasized on converting Pagan Europeans... therefore, because of the use of the word "pagan" in the Bible, now the word for false religions became synonymous with "paganism".
Why the caller would describe Buddhism as a pagan religion is beyond me. Definitely Buddhism isn't paganism. In fact, there Christians who also practice Buddhism and Buddhists who also practice Christianity. There are "Zen Christians," etc. You can read more about these things by simply doing a Google search. Lots of results will turn up.
I dont see him as tturning his back on a God but going forward to true compassion which lets people find God or not find god on there own.. God is a personal issue and should stay that way.. Im agnostic pagan but also do zazen. i love it.. namaste
