Minnesota Fighting Saints WHA Fights, hits, goals. Features rare footage of Billy Goldthorpe, Jack Carlson, Paul Holmgren and a classic fight between Terry Ruskowski and Ron Busniuk.
I remember watching a Saints vs Aeros game - a bench-clearing brawl (and I mean everyone fought, not just grabbed and danced). At the end, the two goalies skated to center ice, dropped their gloves and duked it out. Classic!!!
Best playoff I ever saw was between the Aeros and Fighting Saints in 1974 for sheer intimidation and just plain toughness. Every game was fight filled and in one of the games at the old Sam Houston Coliseum the fights continued outside the rink as the visitors had to exit near the goal line and then walk through the public concourse to get to their dressing room. Just great memories would love to have a video of this entire series.
Every time Gordy Howe would come to town he and Gordie Gallant would have a go. I never saw Howe lose, but I saw fights to a draw and I saw Gallant get beat. Man that Howe was a tough dude.
VJChula you are absolutely correct, and thanks for the correction. The old WHA had a lot of gypsy franchises, and the Mariners joined the Ottawa Civics, the Michigan Stags, the Jersey Blades and a bunch of other teams who tried to make a go in that crazy league. Got to see a lot of those teams playing the Cincy Stingers in the Old Riverfront Coliseum. But my fave was the IHL Dayton Gems, with tuff hombres like Goldy, Willy Trognitz and Bill Riley going toe to toe every night...
