This is not entirely true. Greyhounds or at least something very close, so far as research has shown, were the first domesticated dog back in Egypt--it might not be Egypt but that area. They have been around long before dog racing. They were used for hunting.
They might not be so prevalent without racing but it would probably be better than the abuse they see at the track.

DOG: haha mother fuckers found the garbage..... oooh is that chocolate..........5 minutes later WHY!!!!
OWNER: god damnit he did it again time to find another hiding spot

the trick is to catch them when they're doing it and scare the hell out of them! Another thing to try is leaving the trash in plain view in the kitchen, walk out of the room and spy on them. As soon as they go for the trash, run in there, yell at them and chase them out of the house. Leave them outside for 15 minutes. Try to come in the kitchen from a different entrance each time. My dog is afraid to go through the garbage now cause he never knows where or when I might catch him!

My greyhound used to do something similar--Gabbie would operate the foot lever on the bin to open it up. They are so cunning!

We had to put a lock on ours too!!! Our IGGY pulls ours open!! Opens doors, gets into the pantry WITH a 20lb Bread Baker in front of it!! They are SO SMART and I love them so much!!

@WatchUProductions Thanks for that info about their name. My comment was in reference to someone saying that without the "sport" of racing greyhounds wouldn't be around. I was pointing out that the breed came long before racing.

@boudiicea The name Greyhound comes from the Norse [I believe] for sight. Greyhounds are literally Sight hounds, and they used their sight for hunting.
Fat lot of good t does my greyhound, we even move his head in the direction of he rabbit a few feet away, still takes him ages to notice it.
...your comment is over a year old.... I don't care =D

Mine tries this, so I decided to get rid of bacon grease by throwing it in a pile of dirt. She ran straight to it and started eating the dirt first time she got out of the back yard. She musta had that on her mind all day. She is always thinking of schemes. You have to watch them like a hawk.
They are alot smarter than they look...LOL
