I think this was part of the US's plan to incite another attack on American soil (failing them planning another one themselves) as justification for either:

a. instituting martial law before the Bush presidency runs out

b. continued support of Israel and illegal settlement expansion

c. the further demonizing of Muslim and Arab countries.

d. all of the above

Perhaps when the horror of war, occupation and terrorism comes home to north America (where it was born), people will finally wake up.
