http://bit.ly/SaveThisVideo - Do you think Avatar is racist? What bothers you the most about this topic?

Avatar just came off its fourth week on top of the box office, and a sore subject continues to overshadow its success. Ever since its release back in December the only thing that people can talk about are the racist undertones the story puts on display. A story that most of us see as a blatant rip-off of several war films from the past.

According to an article from The Herald, the problem most people have with the film is the concept of a white male entering into a world of ethnic people, with the sole intent of using them for his own personal gain. Anyone with eyes can see that this premise wreaks of too many movies to count, Dances With Wolves being the most evident, but Avatars draw isnt its story. The films marketing campaign emphasizes the visuals, and how director James Camerons vision is history in the making.

Speaking of Cameron, all of the casting done in the film had his seal of approval, so hes come under attack for using actors of color to portray the Navi people, while white Australian Sam Worthington stars as the cultural infiltrator. Annalee Newitz, editor-in-chief of the sci-fi Web site io9.com said, Main white characters realize that they are complicit in a system which is destroying aliens, AKA people of color (then) go beyond assimilation and become leaders of the people they once oppressed, she wrote. When will whites stop making these movies and start thinking about race in a new way? wrote Newitz, who is white.

Cameron has said on more than one occasion that Avatar is meant to encourage people to respect each others cultures and differences, and while that may be the case, he still fell into a familiar trap. Regardless if it was intentional or not there are some obvious racial undertones in the film, and you cant ignore them no matter how pretty you paint the picture. The reason people are getting so upset is because they know this story all too well, and are sick of seeing it onscreen.

  • conscience about their actions. If people who are stuck on the racism thing really dont see that the irresponsiblity of power in humanities hand is the real issue then try this. Dont you think that the idea of inslaving and exploint people and the origins of "racism" came from certain peoples hunger for power. It just so happen to be anglo people. The hunger for power would have set in for any person of color because people have really lost their way of how to live, that issue is great than race

  • it wouldnt be a big deal. For people to get racism out of this movie is sad because the real issue is humanities lack of balance with power. This movie shows that people really do not have a good grasp at moderation to the fullest extent, trying to exploit other planets. And it really show how unaware people are when doing this, which is represented by that guy whos in the "Boiler Room" the one who is in charge of the whole operation of mining the planet in "Avatar". People should really be

  • its really funny how race is an issue to so many people. the concept race shouldve even exist in peoples minds because there is only the human race. the idea of people categorized and labeled by color only exist because people still think that idea, and its ironically the ones that claim to be victims of racism. If people recieve ignorant comments, they take them personally, but why would you if they are ignorant for say those comments in the first place? If people didnt make it a big deal then

  • Im white yeah, but i dont see this as a racist movie. More like a races unite movie, because the two races learned to understand eachother and LOVE eachother at the end. The two races actually took over the humans in the end. Why do we have to have color rule everything, how come we cant say we are the human race and leave it at that. I mean dogs and cats they have different breeds and patterns and stuff, but they are all just dogs and cats. Feline race, Canine race, human race.

  • the biggest movie in history yet, but racist all the navi cast was black!!

  • hey, who the hell hires ex-marines to go to other planets!? and where are the reporters? and yes, avatar is racist and a rip-off of almost every sci fi story ever

  • I dont like how the bad people are pretty much ALL WHITE PEOPLE.....and the good sad poorrrrrr na'vi are the black people....

  • @rudeboyazab did you even watch this movie?? In the end the navi(supposedly based on black people) are the heroes..
