Unfortunately, at least for some exotic hardware, Linux doesn't work. Older version of Linux can have the drivers I need, but there are huge software compatibility problems. So I reverted to good old Win98. BTW, if you have a more powerful computer you cand try *BSD, it's nicer in a lot of things tha Linux and is also free.

I never had any problems with hardware when using Linux, as well there is enough software for me. I also have windows98se license(non-cracked), though I lost it and I cant find it :-*

Damn small linux works pretty well on 32 meg, but still i prefer windows98 for the software choiche and hardware compatibility. BTW I have a spare win98 license, not a cracked version, so if you don't have one, and want to stay legal your only choiche is linux.
I have a Gateway Solo 2500 Laptop and it is a Pentium 2 366 processor and am looking for the right OS for it. ( It runs Windows 98 SE now).The one thing I don`t understand is about the drivers. How do you know or should I say,how does the OS know what drivers work with your PC?

@webman1956
Linux usually recognises drivers automatically, because most drivers are "build-in", as I know, but newest ubuntu fails with laptops with ati's gfx cards for some reason, at last my ibm t30, in windows youll have to find drivers at most time by yourself, for example if it has ati radeon express 1100, then google ati radeon express 1100 drivers etc.
For your laptop, try damn small linux, or xubuntu if it has over 128mb(256mb should be enough)ram
