On May 24th 2002 5 year old Isaac Lawrence was killed by merely brushing up against a garage door of a detached garage after playing with a garden hose and in small pool. He was electrocuted with 120 volts due to faulty electrical wiring. This is how it happened.

  • @Membrane556 yup, i jsut started pulling our home appart for some projects and found several serious no-no's that the previous owner did. One of the more minor was several feet of extersion cords were chopped and used as wiring. I am also having to rewire our garage because the iddiot used 12 gauge UFB on a single 30a breaker! Its spliced four times on its way out, including a D/D light. They then split it up into three 15a breakers in the garage and used another extinsion cord.

  • This kind of stuff really makes me angry. How heartbreaking.

  • I can't believe they were dumb enough to use the bare wire for the traveler.

I seen someone use the wrong wire for a three way switch before but at least they were smart enough to use the bare wire for the neutral.

Using the bare wire for the traveler is just insane.

The proper way is to use 14/3 which has an extra insulated red wire and the garage should be on it's own breaker vs daisy chained to an outside outlet heck give it it's own grounding rod as well.

  • What the Hell! Were they trying to save themselves or the owner some money?

14 g wire is not legal underground, 12 g is min wire size for underground (at least where I live) Detached garages are to be on a dedicated circuit from the panel. Outlets are to have GFCI protection. 3 way switching is supposed to be wired with 3 wire cable plus ground. To properly wire that circuit they would have needed to run 2 cables to the garage, 2 wire for the power feed, 3 wire for the 3 way switches.

  • Damn that was stupid. Who the hell would feed a garage from a 20amp (maybee it was a 15amp) outdoor circiut anyway? It was gonna burn eventually, regardless. I'm truly sorry for this families loss.
