I think its not Bono that made the mistake, the edge put him off by going into the chorus earlier than it was supposed to. Overal, good song! nice to see bono strum for a change :)

Bono didn't forget the lyrics. If you know the original version, that was all the lyrics on that song. He threw in some La Bamba lyrics at the end cause they were in Mexico and he wanted to connect a little more to the fans.

He clearly forgot the lyrics. Sure he wrote the song but he's also a man who's getting on in years. A man his age is allowed to forget the occasional lyric. He clearly says "it's been a while" (since he sang the song. When he says "I'm done" he reveals his frustration, albeit playfully.
In the end it was a brilliant version of Desire. One of my favorite moments of any U2 concert.
