hey hows it going, so i got this guy arguing with me about steelhead, whats the difference between steelhead and rainbows? ive already looked on wikipedia and it says they are the same specie except with suttle difference is that true?

The true difference between a rainbow and a steelhead is the genetic and behavioral predisposition to migrate to and from the ocean (or Great Lakes here in MI) to spawn. Rainbows were probably derived from steelhead that lost the ability to get back to the ocean after their spawning runs and became landlocked in rivers that no longer had a connection to the ocean. So I would argue that a rainbow is a steelhead and that rainbows as we know then came from steelhead stock.
