Radiohead - On the Beach, from the bootleg album "Gagging Order [Acoustic Renditions]".

"On the Beach" is a bluesy meditation on the downside of fame. For nearly two decades, rarity made a cult out of On the Beach. The title was deleted from vinyl in the early 1980's and only briefly released on cassette—the old slip case style, as well as 8-track tape. On the Beach headed the list of most-desired albums not released on CD.

In 2007, On the Beach was named the 40th Canadian Album of All Time in Bob Mersereau's book The Top 100 Canadian Albums.

This Neil Young cover first turned up at a soundcheck for the Maida Vale show. An acoustic set by Thom and Jonny for BBC Radio 1 on December 8th. This song was first broadcast on December 22 on BBC 6MUSIC. When this recording was made is not exactly sute. It could be that same soundcheck.

This is the fourth cover of a Neil Young song that has been performed. Te band have played 'Cinnamon Girl' on various live shows in 2001. 'After the Goldrush' was performed by Thom Yorke in 2001 for the Bridge School Benefit and 'Tell Me Why' in Los Angeles on August 25th.

LYRICS:
The world is turnin'
I hope it don't turn away
The world is turnin'
I hope it don't turn away
All my pictures are fallin'
from the wall where I placed them yesterday.
The world is turnin'
I hope it don't turn away

I need a crowd of people
But I can't face them day to day
I need a crowd of people
But I can't face them day to day
Though my problems are meaningless
That don't make them go away
I need a crowd of people
But I can't face them day to day

I went to the radio interview
But I ended up alone at the microphone
I went to the radio interview
But I ended up alone at the microphone
Now I'm livin' out here on the beach
But those seagulls are still out of reach
I went to the radio interview
But I ended up alone at the microphone

Get out of town
Think I'll get out of town
Get out of town
Think I'll get out of town
I head for the sticks with my bus and friends
I follow the road
Though I don't know where it ends
Get out of town
Get out of town
Think I'll get out of town

'Cause the world is turnin'
I don't want to see it turn away

  • i feel really so sorry for radiohead. they are such a brilliant band, but have some of the most horribly elitist fans ive ever had the misfortune of encountering

  • The number of chords an artist uses says absolutely nothing about the quality of their music. As a blues, this Neil Young song relies mostly on a three-chord I-IV-V progression in a minor key. Does it suck?

    I think not.

  • @brucechrist Dude how judgemental and shallow do you want to be? Everyone has their favourite band and is entitled to love them as much as they want, I know thousands of Radiohead fans and they all love other bands as well, just Radiohead is their favourite, you shouldn't go writing nasty stuff about a bands fans, muse's fans are just the same as radiohead's, so is the beatles and so on

  • @gon2bed Radiohead fans are worse than most in my experience, so many of them think that music begins and ends with radiohead...which I just find so annoying...For the record, I think they are incredible. But i'm also aware of other incredible music that has been made before, and look forward to hearing the incredible music that will be made in future. Just wish a lot of Radiohead fans would open their fucking minds (and ears) a bit more

  • @brucechrist You are an ass! Fans is fans, every band has ass fans!

  • Damn, he sounds nearly identical to Young in this.

  • Thank you, based Thom.

  • simply beautiful......sparse & haunting.......pay tribute to the ones who came before, made you feel, paved the way......radiohead, one of the most brilliant bands ever covers a legend...pretty cool I would have never guessed

  • Brilliant cover. Thanks for posting.

  • Excellente reprise. Mais, à l'oreille, je préfère la version de Neil Young.

  • Fuck all the negative comments. Thom has said in many an interview how much he respects Neil Young's contribution to the music industry. This is a brilliant cover albeit it uniquely different in some parts - I love it.

  • thanks radiohead.
